What you need to know:

  • Built in 1906, constructed in Queen Anne Victorian style, and originally owned by Stephen Green, one of the founders of City National Bank
  • Came to be owned by Dorothy Rankin Bembridge in 1919, thus the name. Today the house is in almost pristine condition and contains original furnishings dating from the early 1900s.
  • The house is a highly ornate example of Victorian architecture.  Examples include a steep gable roof, hexagonal tower crowned by a conical roof, paired ionic columns supporting the porch, and the ornate frieze of floral designs that runs underneath the porch eave (to name a few).
  • There are 18 rooms and four bathrooms (all original to the house). The master bedroom still has the original gas-electric chandelier.
  • On the property is a two-story carriage house with a hay loft and hay chute.

“The mansion was constructed during a decade in which the population expanded by 600% and the local economy boomed. Its construction overlapped that of the luxurious Virginia Hotel on Ocean Boulevard and other early mansions, such as the Jotham Bixby residence on Ocean Boulevard and Magnolia, which has not survived.” Long Beach Heritage
