The 81st Annual Great Sand Sculpture Contest brings together families, community and artists to celebrate in one of the most defining elements of our community: our local beach! Inspired by the event’s theme, “Sculpting Literacy in Your Community” community and professional teams will be challenged to sculpt their story of our great community and inspire promoting literacy in Long Beach.

Check out the public exhibition space for all art forms this Saturday! Independent, folk, grass root artists as well as professional artists. Musicians, dancers, theatre and street performers are encouraged to participate. 2nd Saturday Art Walk Arts Fair secures space for Long Beach Museum of Art, Museum of Latin American Art, Cal. State Long Beach Art Gallery and LBCC Art Gallery to include their exhibits together with smaller grass roots neighborhood organizations.

Kenneth Walker Dance Project presents Trajectorie. The dance “Savage Grace” will make its company premiere. “Savage Grace” was commissioned by South Bay Ballet and was the closing ballet at the Regional Dance America dance conference when it was performed. This highly regarded dance is making its way into our rep with the help of the Los Angeles County Arts Council which is supporting the season in part and our company artists and guest performers who are coming to us from companies such as South Bay Ballet, Utah Regional Ballet, and Boston Ballet.

Learn about our local adobe soil and its uses throughout history at one of the muddiest, wackiest events in Southern California! Guests will make real adobe bricks, plaster a wall with mud, construct a mini-adobe home, compete in mud relay races, throw a clay pot, explore archaeology, and even examine critters that live in the soil. There are also plenty of “clean” activities, and live bluegrass music throughout the afternoon. Refreshments for sale.
