Hellman Ranch Wetlands
1st St. & Pacific Coast Highway
Ecologists will offer a free nature walk. Participants will observe some of the many species of birds that thrive in the wetlands.
A highlight of the walk will be learning about the Tongva Native Americans who lived in the area and made use of the resources provided by the wetlands.
The entrance to the wetlands is at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and 1st Street, at the border of Long Beach and Seal Beach.
There is ample parking. This walk is appropriate for age 7 and up.

The first Miss USA and Miss Universe competitions happened in Long Beach in 1952, and now two preliminary pageants are returning to that birthplace the weekend of Jan. 3-4. Both Miss California USA and Miss California Teen USA will be held at the Terrace Theater with Westin Long Beach as the host hotel. The pageant will put on three shows (two preliminary competitions and one final competition) that will be ticketed events open to the public. The arena will host 10 performances of the ice show between Jan. 1 and Jan. 5. This year’s show will feature a debut by Merida from “Brave,” with royal contenders competing to win her heart. Sebastian from “The Little Mermaid” will also make an appearance with Ariel. Other highlights include performances by Rapunzel of “Tangled,” and Belle and Beast of “Beauty of the Beast.” Ticket prices range from $22 to $80. Lindsey performs a broad range of music, from familiar jazz standards and blues to Brazilian/Latin Jazz, classical, rock/pop and original compositions. Hundley has performed alongside internationally known artists including: Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Bennie Maupin, Barbara Streisand, Patrice Rushen, Kurt Elling, Jack Sheldon, Bob Mintzer, Tony Dumas, Roy McCurdy, Louis Bellson, and Phil Driscol. Lindsey was selected in 2011 and 2012 to perform her jazz arrangements of Bach’s famous works as part of the Long Beach Bach Festival. Lindsey Hundley currently resides in Long Beach and is the leader of LADY JAZZ, an ensemble that performs Hundley’s original jazz and was created to celebrate contributions and talents of female jazz musicians.
